As Principal Contractors, Thomas Bow City Asphalt completed the construction of the Clinical Chemistry Car Park for Nottingham’s City Hospital in March 2010.
This sizeable project included the development of land in order to create much needed parking for hospital staff. The construction included improvements to the main access road and pedestrian footpaths, along with the formation of access and egress for the new 72 space car park, incorporating lighting and electronic barrier systems.
Objective: The objective was to ensure access to the hospital remained constant and uninterrupted at all times, whilst taking into account this main access route was used for a wide range of purposes including Emergency Vehicles attending A&E, suppliers making essential deliveries, staff, patients and visitors alike, including a large number of pedestrians.
Solution: Thomas Bow City Asphalt brought about the perfect solution, which included undertaking the work on a phased basis, ensuring pedestrians could be moved onto completed areas as each phase was completed, avoiding the need to close any part of the main entrance carriageway at any time.
Problems encountered: During the construction of the car park entrance, Thomas Bow City Asphalt discovered underground metal ducting, which was found to be carrying essential heating to the hospital. This previously unknown service was located and dealt with quickly and efficiently by our management team, who immediately contacted the Project Manager with a solution, which was later implemented.
