Grantham Market Place Completed
On 21st October, Thomas Bow City Asphalt successfully completed the Grantham Market Place Refurbishment Public Realm contract for Lincolnshire County Council.
This £1.7m Public Realm Scheme was the first phase of a two-phase contract. The first phase was constructed over three smaller phases, each of which was broken down into “mini” phases so as to minimise any disruption to local residents and adjacent retailers/businesses etc.
The works commenced in the heart of Grantham and encompassed the busy Market Place before extending through Westgate to the junction of Wide Westgate. The third and final phase commenced at the junction of Market Place and Conduit Street and continued throughout the entire length of Union Street to the junction of North Street.
Thomas Bow Contracts Manager, Brian White was site based for the entire duration of the works and managed the construction of this project. Brian and his team benefit from extensive experience working on similar Public Realm projects within heavily populated City Centres, where both traffic and pedestrian management are of critical importance to ensure the safe delivery of the works and equally so. Brian, also acting as our full-time, site-based Customer Liaison Officer worked closely with local residents and adjacent retailers, liaising with them regarding the progress of our works and ensuring that effective communications are maintained with them and other stakeholders throughout the construction phase.
Critical to the success of this scheme was our ability to maintain access and egress to shops and business premises directly affected by our works, ensuring works outside of their main entrances was carried out outside of opening hours to ensure disruption was minimised. Brian also provided additional help and support to businesses in the form of “labour”, to assist with the loading and unloading of deliveries, providing that helping hand to stakeholders, whilst also aiding the construction phase by expediently moving parked vehicles quicker, allowing works to continue without interruption.
Prior to and throughout the construction phase, Thomas Bow held numerous public meetings in conjunction with the local Business Club, ensuring open lines of communication were maintained at all times. The Client, LCC were delighted with our excellent communication, stakeholder involvement and quality of work.
